What kind of flea preventative should I use?

Im trying to find our what the best flea preventative is for dogs. Previously, I used Comfortis but that is too expensive. I don't really like the liquid flea meds because they are too messy. I just need something inexpensive and in pill form or chewy pill form. Thanks if anyone can help out.
